Where does all of that data come from that you see scrolling on Ticker Displays? Can you get free data sources for LED Tickers?
Incorporating live data such as sports scores, news headlines, and stock quotes, into your LED Ticker is a great way to make your display engaging. Basic LED signs (message centers) only come with a keypad or simple software to upload messages. In most respects, these are not “tickers” – they are designed to show a rotation of information like a billboard. Wall-Street style Tickers are designed to constantly (and smoothly) scroll live financial quotes that are always changing.
Having licensed data displaying can get expensive. Why would you want to pay for something that you can get for free from Internet sources such as Google or Yahoo? The answer is complicated. While those data services may be free to you (while viewing their website), the host site is still paying for the licensing fees and these usually prevent you from publicly displaying it (like on a ticker). More importantly nothing prevents that website from changing their design and removing the data service you are using.
If you find a “free” source make sure you read the fine print. These services are for people viewing the information on their computer and have significant usage restrictions for use on a public displays. Some news feed aggregators will include a clause in their terms of usage that forbids embedding their feed in a scrolling text banner of any kind. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the usage conditions; when in doubt, contact the feed provider directly, and explain the intended usage before publishing it on your Ticker display. Breaking the terms may seem harmless, but it will come back to haunt you. If you willfully use the content against the terms, you will end up paying a fortune in legal fees.
