Rise Ticker delivers breaking election results to viewers on live Global Television broadcast

On January 23, 2006, Rise Display had the chance to supply a very intelligent prop to CanWest Global Television’s live coverage of the Canadian federal elections.  A Rise Ticker display showing breaking election results played a prominent role in the network’s “Decision Canada” coverage that evening.  The background Ticker was seen by three quarter of a million Canadian viewers who tuned into Global to watch the election results.

According to Global’s James Carnrite, the Ticker was chosen “to provide an attractive design element with flashing lights in the background” of their broadcast.  With its constant stream of results and its colourful graphic elements,  the bright display contributed much to the broadcast’s desired image of immediacy, excitement and credibility.

Of course, those flashing lights also had to be displaying intelligent content, and that’s where Rise’s “Total Display Solution” approach really made the difference.  In addition to selecting and installing the hardware, Rise also supplied Global with the ODBC database connectivity that allowed them to put the rapidly changing election results on the screen as soon as they occurred, as well as the software that the broadcaster needed to control and configure that data as it came in.

Mr. Carnrite gives the Ticker’s performance a very positive review, confirming that it “met our needs for that important event” and praising Rise Display for its “excellent service.”

Now that the elections are over, Global Television plans to reinstall the Ticker on another set design, and may lengthen it with additional sections to optimize the placement of the display in its next home.  In fact, part of Global’s reason for choosing a Rise Display display was because of the modular nature of the Rise Ticker, which lends itself particularly well to redeployment in new settings when a company’s display needs change.  As important as it was for Global Television to have the Ticker on camera for that one event, an equally compelling factor in their purchasing decision was the ability to reconfigure and reuse the display after its debut on election night.

The Ticker’s recent Global Television appearance was just the latest instance of Rise Display’ increasing participation in broadcast television’s use of electronic displays on set designs.  Rise technology also powers the on-air electronic displays of other Canadian television networks such as CBC Newsworld and Toronto’s CityTV.
