OU’s new trading lab uses video wall with ultra thin bezels

Student’s at OU’s Price College of Business now have a state-of-the-art finance lab to simulate the workings of a real life trading floor on campus.  To help create the atmosphere the finance faculty worked closely with Rise Display to incorporate a 8 color LED ticker along the back wall to show the latest market updates of the DOW 30 stocks with their corresponding company logo along with a couple of 46” LCD displays to show the latest news and market information.  At the front of the room is a 2x2 LCD video wall using the latest technology from NEC Display Solutions with ultra thin bezels (only 7.3mm between each screen) to create the main focal point of the room.

Digital Signage Example Gallery

One of the most common requests I hear from clients is for photos of installations.  While they aren’t always easy to get, we push our installers and sales team hard to make sure they have cameras with them and get photos whenever possible to show digital signage in action.

We have been steadily improving our website over the past few months and we now have over 500 images of actual installations and content examples for visitors to browse through.  If you have a moment visit our Examples section and send us feedback, or better yet if you are an existing Rise client and have a great picture you would allow us to share please email it to us at sales@risedisplay.com.

Digital Directory Display at Northeastern University

Digital Directory Display at Northeastern University

The new digital signage system at Northeastern University has multiple components from a 2x2 video wall, digital signage showing events, and digital directory displays.  Historically printed signs or the white stick on letters were used for building directories, but as the cost of digital signage continues to drop and software advances why would any new building not go digital.

Think of the benefits:
1) unlimited flexibility to change the look and background
2) the ability to incorporate news and weather
3) if you reassign rooms no need to reprint
4) wow factor - impress visitors
5) for important events direct traffic

These are just a fraction of the reasons so if you are building a new building and you are thinking static, think again.  And if you are thinking digital signage, go one step further and think interactive digital signage, because users are becoming more savvy and they are expecting your displays to be touch enabled.

Roger Williams Finance Lab - Video Wall installation

Roger Williams has been a Rise client for many years originating with our 3 color LED wallboards through an upgrade 3 years ago to a LCD Video Wall.  Video Walls come in all shapes and sizes and for their finance lab we utilized NEC monitors to create a 3x1 wall that acts as the focal point to the room showing all of the latest market information from around the world.

This picture was taken last week during a service visit and as you can see after over 3 years the displays still look very sharp.  While the displays may not have the ultra thin bezels and sleek look of the video walls we are installing today, the effect is still the same when people view the room for the first time -  the displays definitely attract attention.

CALSTRS uses multi-screen LCD configuration to replace LED Datawall

CALSTRS uses multi-screen LCD configuration to replace LED Datawall

The California State Teachers Retirement Services (CALSTRS) recently replaced their character -based, three color, LED wallboards with new NEC LCD Displays.  While most of their content is simple financial market data that is shown in Green (for positive) and red (for negative) the new Video Wall Display system gives them the flexibility to now show charts, graphics, and utilize the full spectrum of colors.

Most video wall applications stack the LCDs together in traditional landscape orientation, but to best fill the space left by the LED Datawall we worked with the client to orient each display in portrait mode to best utilize the space.

The end result a uniquely designed digital signage solution that keeps traders abreast of current market conditions.

Digital Signage Addition to the Main Lobby at Dodge Hall

The school of business at Northeastern University recently added a 2x2 LCD video wall and two 46” LCD digital signs to the main lobby area of Dodge Hall.

The video wall shows the latest market updates and news to keep students updated with the happenings in the financial markets and provides a focal piece for all visitors to building.

Each 46” NEC LCD display is mounted in portrait mode with one showing a building directory and the other one showing all of the latest events within the college.

The end result - a dynamic atmosphere that uses technology to communicate with students each days as they pass through the halls.

Custom LED Ticker Installation at Arkansas Tech University

When students choose Arkansas Tech, they get the best of two worlds: big-time technology and education in a friendly, small-town setting. Because the university believes that exposing students to tomorrow’s technology is the only way to prepare them for the jobs they deserve, Tech has invested in world-class equipment and facilities.

To bring the latest in technology to the new trading lab opening next semester in the college of business the faculty enlisted the help of Rise Display to design a unique LED Ticker that starts in the hallway, goes through the glass wall, and wraps around the finance lab.

The focal point of the trading room is a large 2x2 LCD Video Wall showing the latest market updates and news information controlled by Display Wire.

Learning is a serious business, my hat goes off to Arkansas Tech for investing in the technology to create this one of a kind atmosphere for their students.

Digital Signage Technology Tip: Video Wall Bezels

Digital Signage Technology Tip: Video Wall Bezels

Advancements in technology over the past 6 months are changing the way LCD video walls are perceived. New ultra-narrow bezels allow for the distance between two displays of only 7.3mm, nearly a 450% improvement from the 33mm spacing for standard commercial grade displays.  When viewing at a distance of several feet away the bezel gap between displays is barely noticeable and ensures a uniform picture across the entire video wall.

All LCD displays are not created equal when it comes to stacking them together to create a wall of information.  You will pay a premium for the ultra narrow bezels but the effect and atmosphere they create is well worth the investment.

To further maximize your investment in a LCD video wall take a close look at your software to make sure you can properly position content to account for the bezels and enable you to take full advantage of the resolution of the screen.

Digital Signage Technology Tip: Video Wall verses LED Wallboard

Digital Signage Technology Tip: Video Wall verses LED Wallboard

Historically Financial Trading Floors and Business School Finance Labs have used large LED wallboards to post current market data and news.  The LED wallboards provide long life, great viewing distances and you could easily build large walls out of them to create a focal point in any trading environment.

A couple of good photo examples can be seen at: PIMCO and University of Pittsburgh.

With advancements in LCD technology and the new ultra thin bezels, video walls have replaced these LED datawalls.  For users still investigating the LED wallboard technology here are 5 things to investigate and compare to help make your decision:

Color - with a LED wallboard you get 3 colors (red, green, amber) verses with a video wall you get the full spectrum of color

Flexibility- with a LED wallboard it is alpha numeric meaning a fixed character height for letters and numbers and if you purchase a 16 line by 64 character display, that will always be your limit.  The advantage of what you can dynamically do with a video wall is obvious.
image
Graphics - with a LED wallboard you are limited to alpha numeric characters, with the video wall you can show graphs, charts, animations, video and live TV

Lead time - LED wallboards are custom built to order normally taking 6 weeks or better to build.  LCDs are in stock and can ship the same week.

Price - with all of that functionality you would expect the LCD video wall to be more expensive.  Actually it is on average 20% to 25% more economical.

Overall LED wallboards are still a great technology, but they just can’t compete with the mass production of LCD screens and in the end price and flexibility will always win.  If you want more information you can view a 10 minute video comparison of the technologies.

Rise Creative Services Example: Ag Country 2x1 Video Wall

Ag Country recently donated dual LCD configurations to both NDSU and University of Minnesota to help keep students informed about the latest job openings and news in the farming community.  Since the displays are posted in each school’s college of business they also wanted to post the latest commodity prices to create awareness for the futures markets that help drive Ag business.

The end result if a very graphical and visual design that helps helps provide valuable brand recognition to Ag Country while communicating with students on both campuses.

Digital Signage in Education: UMKC

What is better than using digital signage to communicate with students?  Doing it at very little to no cost to the university.

While may schools explore the option of selling advertising space to local businesses many find that it is becomes a full time job to sell the space, produce the content, and figure out the rate schedule.  A much easier option is to follow what the sports stadiums have done - sell the naming rights.  Each college within a university has distinguished alumni and partnerships with local businesses that recruit graduates.  Why not leverage these relationships to get secure a sponsorship and place a static plaque recognizing that key donor.

Enclosed in this post is a photo of the digital signage installation at the Bloch School of Business at UMKC.  Great example of a business school leveraging their partnership with a local business to bring state-of-the-art technology to their students.

Digital Signage from Rise Display Creates ‘Dynamic Ambiance’ at University of Oklahoma

Digital Signage from Rise Display Creates ‘Dynamic Ambiance’ at University of Oklahoma

The University of Oklahoma is known both for sports teams that consistently win national championships, and for its students’ high academic achievements. Indeed, the university’s Price College of Business ranks in U.S. News & World Report’s top 50 in undergraduate business schools and in the top 15 in undergraduate business specialties for international business. One way that OU maintains its standards of excellence is to offer the latest technology to its students—most recently, digital signage from Rise Display.

“We were searching around for the best vendor to help us get this [digital signage] up, and that’s where Rise came in,” says Robert Dauffenbach, Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Programs.

The digital signage was to be installed in a new, approximately 1,500 square-foot trading room at the business school. The room seats 32 computer stations, where students study, research, and put presentations together, and Dauffenbach dedicated significant time and energy to determining the best and most appropriate vendor for the project. As part of his research, he learned which other business schools around the country were using digital displays, and even went to visit several campuses in person. The vendor these schools kept referencing was Rise Display.

The digital signage installation began during the summer of 2009 and ended just in time for the university’s fall semester to begin. Now the trading room boasts an impressive 36-foot long, eight-color LED Ticker, 2x2 video wall using ultra thin bezels, and two single 46-inch displays. Rise Display Systems remotely handles the content, including financial data streaming, for the monitors. On any given day, students will see stock information on Oklahoma public companies, as well as data on worldwide markets, displayed on the digital signage.

“The scrolling LED ticker display increases the dynamic ambiance of the room,” Dauffenbach says, “Rise was the only [vendor] I found that was able to get that for us.”

Because of the room’s new, professional atmosphere, it is perfect for certain Price College events. Recently, a breakfast meeting was held there for the Price College Board of Advisers, with a special guest in attendance: Jim Kramer, host of CNBC’s “Mad Money.”  “We had the ticker display going and, of course, all the statistics from various markets around the world displayed,” says Dauffenbach. “It was a nice backdrop for the get-together with Kramer.”

Rise Display Installation:  Quinnipiac

A little over 6 years ago we installed 2 LED wallboards for the trading lab at Quinnipiac University.  This past semester we worked with them to update the technology from the original 3 color LED displays to two banks of LCD screens set up in a 2x1 configuration allowing live market data to be spanned across both screens.  The original LED displays allowed for showing simple graphics in three colors (red, green, and amber) while the new displays provide much greater resolution and the ability to show full motion video and the entire range of colors.

If you are currently using a LED wallboard take a moment to check out the short video we created comparing the technologies.

College of William and Mary Turns to Rise Display for Trading Room’s Wall Street Simulation

College of William and Mary Turns to Rise Display for Trading Room’s Wall Street Simulation

John Merrick, Richard S. Reynolds associate professor of business at the College of William and Mary’s Mason School of Business, has had a diverse career in both academics and Wall Street. That was why, when he first came to the university in 2005, he was asked to provide a vision for how the school’s proposed Acuff Financial Markets Center could be developed.

“I had had some experience teaching in a trading room,” says Professor Merrick, “and wanted a room that would serve as a financial market lab and, at the same time, and really foremost, as a superior, technology-enhanced lecture space. I think that’s the difference in our room versus other layouts that I’ve seen: It is first and foremost a superior lecture space.”

The Acuff Financial Markets Center now holds both undergraduate and MBA finance classes. In addition, the Center houses the school’s student-run Batten Investment Fund. To simulate a live markets environment, the room incorporates nine Bloomberg terminals—the leading professional system to monitor and analyze financial market data—among its thirty-six student workstations, as well as eleven state-of-the-art LCDs, provided by Rise Display.

“I knew that Rise Display was the premium provider of these displays because I saw how things had worked out at Baruch College, where I formerly taught,” Professor Merrick explains. “I had also caught up with Rise at an academic conference . . . so I introduced them to our building team . . . to see if they concurred.”
They did, and the results of the installation, says Professor Merrick, have been phenomenal.

“In terms of teaching in that room, what you end up with is a very exciting environment,” he says. “You’re getting [students] to work in an environment of routine visual distraction . . . where they have to learn how to absorb what’s coming in and only be attracted by the important stuff, rather than distracted by the changing displays. The second part of the benefits,” Professor Merrick adds, “is being able to put data into our playlist that’s relevant for the topics we’re teaching that day.”

Among the information presented on the nine LCDs lining one side wall, and the two LCDs flanking the front of the room, are CNBC feeds, a news ticker, stock prices, money market rates, bond yields, foreign exchange rates, commodity prices and historical stock and bond market graphs.
“Everybody loves the digital displays,” says Professor Merrick. “Not only our students, but our alumni who come back, especially those who are connected to Wall Street, are duly impressed. Some of our more recent alumni are a little bit jealous,” he adds with a laugh. “They wish they had had these facilities when they were here.”
