Rise Display Installation:  Custom LED Ticker For Casino

Western Technical Services Outfits Casino with a Custom Rise LED Ticker

The food and beverage manager at a west coast casino, knew exactly what he wanted for his new “Media Bar”, a sports bar, which would be the focal point at the end of a long casino floor expansion. When he contacted Western Technical Services regarding the installation of the casino’s new television and digital media for this new, sports themed-bar, Western Technical’s sales manager Sam Smith went to work researching LED ticker options. His task wasn’t easy. The “Media Bar” at the casino was built, and a very specific seven-inch high space was already dedicated for the new ticker. His customer’s timeline was tight, too. They wanted the LED ticker in place for the unveiling of the new floor expansion and bar.

“I went to each supplier and communicated the needs for the project,” Sam explained. “Ultimately, the reason why we chose Rise was that they had the largest selection and easiest availability. The timeline was very short, and they were able to meet our deadline quicker than anybody else.”
Rise Display worked closely with Sam and his installation crew to fulfill Western Technical’s customer’s needs. But that process didn’t come without its challenges. Originally, the plan called for a three-color LED ticker but was changed mid-build to a 38-foot, eight-color ticker display that wraps around the interior of the bar so that Western Technical could meet and exceed its client’s expectations.

“The eight-color ticker on the casino floor is absolutely amazing,” Sam said. “The colors, the logos, you can’t miss it! In order to go to eight-color, we had to get a taller ticker, and Rise turned that around quickly too. … I’m really happy with the decision we made to use Rise.”
Western Technical Services now has a new tool in its arsenal to what they already provide and can offer an interesting element above and beyond what they typically install for their customers.

LED Ticker Technology Tip: Outdoor Displays

LED Ticker Technology Tip: Outdoor Displays

Our expertise is primarily with indoor technology but from time to time we get inquiries for outdoor ticker displays.  The term “ticker” is generically thrown around sometimes so when looking for an outdoor display it is very important define what you are looking for.

While there are many types of outdoor displays from billboards to video displays, people referring to “tickers” usually have 1 of 3 types of displays in mind:

Message Center - Most outdoor displays you see are what I would refer to as message centers.  A message center is a matrix display which means you can stop the text, scroll up, scroll down, and in general present your message as an animation in a page by page format.  Examples of some outdoor message centers.

Ticker Display - A ticker is a continuously scrolling display that steadily scrolls from right to left and you can’t stop the data.  This technology is idea if you are looking to put up a news zipper, sports ticker, or show stock quotes and you are looking to use the display to create the atmosphere.  A good example of this is the enclosed photo of the outdoor ticker we installed for Fidelity in New York.

Ribbon Display - The hybrid of the two is what I would call a “ribbon display”.  This is the technology commonly see wrapping around the inside of a sports arena or stadium.  These displays tend to be more complex and expensive but they do bring you the best of both worlds. Examples of some ribbon displays.

If you are looking to put an outdoor display start by making sure you can legally put one up based on local zoning ordinances and then determine what type of information you want to display.  If you are looking to put in a true LED ticker to show stock quotes, news, or sports scores please let us know if we can be of any help.

Using Unique Tickers to Create a Game Day Experience

Using Unique Tickers to Create a Game Day Experience

University sports programs invest heavily to ensure their fans have an exceptional game day experience.  Today’s stadiums and arenas utilize the latest technology on the field and in the concourses.

On the field you will find state-of-the-art scoreboards, video replay boards, and ribbon displays to keep fans up-to-date with stats, scores, and video replay.  Throughout the concourse you find digital signage utilized for digital menu boards, replaying the game, promoting business partners, and recognizing donors and hall of fame members.  All of these applications ensure that fans are wowed and continue returning event after event.

Another area we are starting to see the use of electronic displays is in the founders clubs, alumni areas, and executive suites.  As these facilities remodel they recognize the need to create these high end areas to entertain their top alumni, donors, and business partners.  While these areas have premium views of the playing area there is also a need to create a unique atmosphere.  Along with using interactive digital signage many teams are turning to full color scrolling LED tickers that they can integrate into their design by wrapping them around bars, embedding them in curved surfaces and streaming them up pillars to create a one of a kind visual experience.  A great example of this is the custom ticker installed by the University of Tennessee during the renovations of historic Neyland Stadium (see the enclosed photo).

JW Marriott Sports Bar Experience

The new JW Marriott in San Antonio has a state-of-the-art sports bar with a unique curved viewing wall showing the latest sporting events and games.  Below the viewing wall we installed a serpentine, full color LED Logo Ticker to show off the schedules and scores for current sporting events.

We hope to get better photos of the ticker to share in a later posting, but photos don’t do this area justice.  If you are in the area we encourage you to stop by for a drink to marvel at the technology.

U of Toronto Mississauga’s Financial Learning Centre Offers Cutting Edge Displays

U of Toronto Mississauga’s Financial Learning Centre Offers Cutting Edge Displays

Customer Overview
Established in 1967, the University of Toronto Mississauga provides undergraduate and graduate studies and is the second largest division of the University of Toronto, Canada’s largest university. The university is set upon a park-like campus on the Credit River, approximately 33 kilometers west of Downtown Toronto.

The Hazel McCallion Academic Learning Centre, UTM’s library, is a central place for the students to meet and study. Tucked inside this library is the Li Koon Chun Finance Learning Centre, a new, state-of-the-art facility. Programming is provided on a variety of topics related to the stock markets and financial literacy for students, faculty, and staff of UTM. The Centre offers 32 computer stations and four Bloomberg terminals for student use and training purposes. In addition, the Centre is used as a unique classroom for students in the department of management.

Project Summary
“There are a couple of finance courses and an international business course held in the Centre,” explains Michael Meth, the Centre’s director. “The management program is one of our biggest supporters, but because of our location in the library, we reach a lot of people on our campus.”
Because of this reach, it was important to the University that the Centre offered cutting-edge communication solutions. That’s where Rise Display comes in.

“The service level, the pricing, and the fact that our needs were met were the factors in choosing Rise,” says Mr. Meth. “We were told that we were Canada’s first eight-color stock ticker. That was a neat thing that Rise got to innovate with us.”

The Rise Solution
The University of Toronto Mississauga had already selected an AV integration partner to provide the Sharp LCD screens for the room, and asked Rise to help define the rest of the digital signage solution along with the ticker. Rise worked closely with IT to build a media player that would support running a 2×1 video wall plus a separate single LCD screen from a server room nearly 1000 feet away. After the media player, video distribution system and LED ticker hardware components were defined, the creative staff went to work designing the content to give a broad overview of the markets worldwide.

The Final Result
The LED ticker, and all three LCDs, were installed and running for the Fall 2008 ribbon-cutting to greet the room’s donor and the media. A wall of windows lets library patrons see the technology from all angles. “The digital signage lets us push through market news, North American Exchange stock quotes and index data, and a live video feed from the Business News Network,” Mr. Meth says.

Mr. Meth has also found an effective way of utilizing the ticker at night, when the stock market is closed but the library is still open.

“We keep the closing prices running, but we also start running sports scores,” he says.

“I think people are pretty impressed by the digital signage,” says Mr. Meth. “People will often stand by the window and watch what’s going on the ticker and displays. Overall, they’ve been very favorably received.”
