Digital displays turn market-watching into a shared experience at Canisius College
Posted on Wed, December 17, 2008
Getting information may be easier than ever in the Internet Age, but sharing that information still poses challenges that can’t be solved by the personal computer alone.
At Canisius College, a private college in Buffalo, NY, students in the Department of Economics and Finance learn the intricacies of global financial markets in part by managing a real-life investment fund. They analyze different business models and market opportunities, and discuss strategies for the fund as part of their business school curriculum. And they needed a way to view and analyze the market together, in a classroom setting.
“The Golden Griffin Fund (GGF) is a student-managed, real money equity investment fund,” explains GGF Director Mike Piemonte. “There are several institutional investors in the fund, which researches and invests in small and mid-cap domestic companies. What sets the fund apart is the work done by the students. They produce high quality investment research and graduate from the program with ‘real world’ skills in both analysis and presentation.”
Mr. Piemonte, who serves as the primary faculty advisor to the student-managers, says that the College went looking for digital displays because “we wanted to be able to see what was happening in the financial markets and what was happening with our portfolio companies.”
Specifically, Canisius business students needed to see that information collectively. “Prior to getting our displays, that information was difficult for a group to access. Information could be accessed on individual computers, but could not be viewed and discussed by a large group.”
To make the particulars and vicissitudes of the financial markets visible to everyone, Canisius invested in a new data board, a ticker display, and two 46” LCD displays, all supplied by Rise Display.
According to Mr. Piemonte, the displays were mounted in prominent locations within the College: “The data board, the ticker and one of the LCDs are located in the financial markets lab, which is used as a classroom for the GGF and is also an information resource to others in school outside the GGF program. The other LCD is located right outside the lab, mounted in a major thoroughfare hallway.”
Along with associated live data feeds, that particular combination of electronic LED and LCD displays “fit our needs,” says Mr. Piemonte. “Information is now available to the GGF class and to others in the college. It’s easier to talk about the goings on in the financial markets to a group of students.
“Everyone has been very happy with the appearance and function of the Rise displays. Rise provided us with a comprehensive solution at a reasonable price.”
Put a LED Ticker on a moving bus? Rise Display rises to the challenge with a one-of-a-kind install
Posted on Mon, February 23, 2009
Last year, ESPN started a “mobile marketing promotion” called the NBA on ESPN RV Tour to generate new fan excitement for their coverage of NBA basketball games. Their “traveling fanfest” is a highly customized recreational vehicle that drives across America to appear at NBA games. Fans going to the game can get their pictures taken, shoot hoops, tour the RV’s interior, and now – thanks to Rise Display – also see the latest sports scores on a full-color ticker display mounted right on the vehicle’s roof.
Scott Nowicki is the Manager of Account Services at rEvolution, the marketing agency behind the management of the RV Tour. He says their bus’s externally-mounted ticker may be the first of its kind. “I would say our display is in one of the most unique locations I’ve ever seen. It’s an 8-foot long ticker positioned on the exterior roof of the ESPN RV, encased in a custom Plexiglas case and displaying constantly updated sports scores across a wide range of sports. It gets its updates from a wireless satellite card, and its power is drawn from a complex system of generators and marine batteries.”
The idea to add the unique ticker to the bus grew from a desire to improve upon the success of the previous season’s tour. “The NBA on ESPN RV Tour is in its second year now,” Mr. Nowicki continues, “so we wanted to find a unique addition to attract even more attention to the RV and the tour. As ESPN is the wide world leader in sports, we felt it was only right that fans should be able to get their up to the minute sports scores and news from the ESPN RV. That’s when we turned to Rise Display.
“We decided on Rise Display because of the great customer service we got while going through the sales process, and most importantly because we felt that they had the best user configuration with information updates that we could rely on.” Finding a reliable expert to help them with the install was very important, he says. “The ESPN RV draws a lot of attention anywhere it goes, so we wanted our ticker to look professional and to display the info that we wanted it to display instantly.”
Now that it’s on the RV and fully operational, Mr. Nowicki and the rEvolution staff are able to keep the content of the ESPN ticker fresh via Rise Display Wire, an online sign content management system that gives users easy and instant control over the information and appearance of their signs. “We are now able to control everything that’s displayed on the ticker from any computer with an internet connection while the RV is out on tour,” he says. “we can add custom logos to the display and we even have a team at Rise Display that will design anything we want to add to the ticker.”
In his opinion, the ticker has definitely enhanced their image and boosted their promotional efforts. “We’ve had nothing but positive feedback from the crew of the RV and the fans that have seen the RV. The rEvolution crew loves it because it’s so easy to use and it brings with it a very professional look to the RV that you can’t take your eyes off. And our client, ESPN, loves it because it’s something that hasn’t been done before.
“The tour’s not over yet,” he concludes, “but we’re very happy so far. We would definitely recommend Rise Display. We plan to use them again in the future.”
Rise displays convey Cornell University’s cutting edge status in investment management education
Posted on Fri, March 6, 2009
When it was time to update the ticker tapes and install a flat panel display in the trading room at Cornell University’s business school, school officials chose Rise Display to provide their display solution. Explains Lakshmi Bhojraj, Director of Cornell’s Parker Center for Investment Research, “As director of the Center, I oversee the trading room and its resources and am responsible for all vendor-partner relationships for the software in the room. The Johnson School’s educational program in investment management, which includes a $11 million student-run hedge fund, is cutting edge and we needed a display environment that would convey its dynamism. After considering our available options, it was clear to me that Rise was the right choice for this project.
“We chose Rise because their displays were eye-catching and Rise offered the best value for money. We wanted to convey the dynamic nature of the trading room and the business school’s cutting edge status in investment management education.”
The result? “We couldn’t be more pleased with the selection of Rise displays for the business school’s trading room and lobby,” said Ms. Bhojraj. “The displays have succeeded in conveying the Johnson School’s leading status in investment research education, and the high energy environment of the trading room.”
“We have also found Rise customer service representatives to be very responsive and helpful and always enjoy working with them.”
Temple University Fox School of Business Installs 177-foot Web-Based LED Ticker from Rise Display
Posted on Tue, March 17, 2009
Rise Display has completed installation of a 177-foot, web-based LED ticker for Temple University’s Fox School of Business. The new ticker uses eight-color LED technology, and displays business headlines, stock quotes, and university messages. It is the largest elliptical ticker installed in a business school, and the longest indoor, eight-color ticker in North America.
“We wanted everyone who entered our new facility to understand that this is a serious business operation, and our LED ticker from Rise Display does it dramatically, and does it well,” says John Deangelo, Associate Dean for Information Technology Business and Management, Fox School of Business at Temple University. “Rise Display offered us a 21st century solution, with full-color display and web-based technology. It includes a simple, direct software solution that is plug-and-play.”
Temple chose the ticker from Rise Display because of the company’s extensive experience working with business schools, because it offered a complete hardware and software solution, and because its web-based interface enabled the university to manage updates from any device with Internet access.
“The ticker has garnered tremendous excitement from everyone who enters the building,” says Deangelo. “It really knocks everyone’s socks off, and the students are very proud of it.”
LED Ticker gives Chapman University’s School of Business a new presence on campus
Posted on Wed, April 8, 2009
Founded in 1861, Chapman University is one of the oldest and most prestigious private universities in the state of California. Attracted to its small classrooms and personalized service, over 6,000 students attend Chapman annually to pursue higher education in the liberal arts and a variety of professional programs.
Among those professional programs is the George L. Argyros School of Business and Economics, situated in a “dream location” on the Chapman campus, a state-of-the-art facility known as the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Business & Technology Hall. With its computer labs, video conferencing capabilities and specialized debate rooms, the facility has everything it needs to support the School’s rigorous business curriculum.
What the School of Business and Economics didn’t have, until recently, was an adequate signpost to indicate its presence on the Chapman campus. That’s why School administrators decided to add a new electronic Ticker display to the building’s hallways. According to Associate Director of Operations Craig Williams, “We wanted something to label our area as ‘The Business School’. A stock ticker was a natural fit.”
They chose a ten-foot long stock ticker board, supplied and installed by Rise Display, a company with whom Chapman University started doing business a long time ago. “We selected Rise for our first ticker almost 10 years ago,” explained Mr. Williams. “Rise has given us good service over the years and we knew that a new board from them was the right way to go.”
To maximize the visibility of their ticker, they chose a strategic location that makes the sign – and the School that it announces – hard to miss. “We occupy the 3rd floor of our building,” said Mr. Williams. “The new ticker is at the head of the grand marble staircase that goes from the first to the third floor, which makes it visible to several hundred students a day.”
Its prominence allows it to act both as their new signpost and as a quick source of financial and School information for their students. “We list upcoming public events as well as Dow 30, Indices and Currency information,” explained Mr. Williams.
Asked about the success of the new ticker, he replied simply, “The new ticker board has much better capabilities than our old sign and is much nicer, giving us a better image. Everyone likes it.”
Students at the Stillman School of Business learn in a real-world trading floor
Posted on Thu, May 28, 2009
The Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University is known for its keen location to Manhattan, which is only 14 miles away, and its reputation as one of the best business schools in the country as recognized by Businessweek. The AACSB-accredited business school was one of the first schools to adopt electronic displays as a tool for learning. Located in South Orange, New Jersey, the practical facility gives Seton Hall University’s business students access to all of the latest financial market data in a securities-trading floor environment.
Central to the delivery of that financial information are the lab’s LED ticker boards, wall-mounted flat-screen LCD displays, and multiple time-zone clocks. All of the electronic signage in the Center for Securities Trading and Analysis was provided by Rise Display.
Elven Riley, Executive in Residence, designed, built and operates the Trading Center. “I knew of Rise from my experience in the industry, having built and operated all of Citicorp’s trading floors in North America,” he explained. “We needed a market ticker, a multi-function display and the support required of a student lab, and Rise Display is a known provider of quality solutions and continued quality support.”
The Center for Securities Trading and Analysis first opened in February 2005, and over 600 Seton Hall students used it in its very first year of operation. “The intent of the Trading Center is to bridge the difference between academic scholarship and industry application, to improve the student educational experience,” said Mr. Riley. “We encourage our students to use all of the equipment in the lab as a learning event.”
Both students and faculty have been pleased with their decision to add Rise electronic displays to their trading lab. “Rise’s solution has been a perfect combination of functionality and excellent support,” he continued. “The Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University has successfully enriched the student learning experience through our Trading Center and the use of Rise solutions. In fact, we are evaluating expanding the management of several of our information displays by a Rise solution.”
Mr. Riley added that their experience in building and equipping their own lab has put Seton Hall in the role of advisor to other schools wishing to do the same. “There were very few universities with trading floors or labs when we began, and over the years we have continued to share our experience with other universities.”

Rise display brings digital signage to the Mississippi College School of Business
Posted on Tue, June 30, 2009
At Mississippi College, the School of Business is the largest school on campus. With over 6,000 graduates to date, the School offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of business disciplines, including marketing, accounting and business administration.
In 2007, the College opened its new J. L. Holloway Business & Technology Center, equipped with several electronic displays supplied by Rise Display. Why electronic signage? “Mississippi College School of Business wanted a state-of-the-art display that would provide up-to-date information on programs of study and upcoming events,” said Katrina Pace, Director of Development. “Electronic displays are an efficient way to keep the students informed about interview opportunities and featured speakers.”
According to Dr. Marcelo Eduardo, the Dean of the School of Business, Rise was their first choice to supply their signage. “The School of Business chose Rise Display because of the ease with which the equipment can be operated, and because of Rise’s good reputation in the electronic world.”
They purchased both LCD displays and LED Tickers, which they use to display a combination of College news and financial information. “The display system provides not only internal school news,” said Dr. Eduardo, “but also streams real-time market information, which allows students to keep abreast of the latest business news. Having the equipment accessible in the classroom also allows professors to reference current market information, and to incorporate real-time events into classroom lectures.
“The Rise display solution has allowed the School of Business to communicate information to numerous students and faculty by keying in a single message. Unlike flyers or brochures, the screens catch the eyes of students and faculty and bring important information to their attention.”
He said that the signs have been a big success. “Overall, we are pleased with the display solution. The screens have been very effective in communicating information, while also contributing to the high-tech atmosphere provided by the MC School of Business.”
Both Dr. Eduardo and Ms. Pace agree that the signage has brought a variety of benefits to the College. “Our goal in installing the new LCDs and LED tickers was to bring our School of Business facility in-line with our progressive academic mission,” said Dr. Eduardo. “In addition to the market information provided for our students and faculty, the look and feel of the equipment has been a useful recruiting tool when prospective students visit our campus.”
LED Ticker completes the decor of the new Business Facility at the University of Illinois
Posted on Mon, July 6, 2009
In 2009, the University of Illinois’ College of Business gained 160,000+ square feet of new building space specially designed “to accommodate state-of-the-art classrooms, career development and academic counseling centers, student program offices, a recruitment suite, a 300-seat auditorium, and space for students to meet and study.”
Known as the Business Instructional Facility, it is the new home for current and future College of Business students and alumni. It is also the first “green” building in the university’s 141-year-old history because of the eco-friendly materials and practices used in its construction, the reduced load it places on campus power and systems, and its reduced impact on the environment.
One prominent feature that contributes significantly to the stunning visual design of the building is a custom-designed curved LED ticker, supplied by Rise Display and prominently displayed in the business school’s new finance lab – the Margolis Market Information Lab.
The director of that lab, Visiting Associate Director Martin Maurer, says that they chose a ticker display in order to give the teaching lab an authentic look and feel. “Our goal with the Market Information Lab was to imitate as closely as possible a real financial trading environment. The ticker display allowed us to add to this feel of our lab.
“The ticker tape is also a great tool to catch people’s attention and raise their curiosity about the lab,” Mr. Maurer explains. “We show real-market stock information as a teaching tool, and also use the display to welcome our corporate partners.”
The College selected Rise Display to supply and install their ticker in large part because of their reputation and positive track record with other universities. “I found out about Rise Display as a result of my visit to Baruch College in New York,” continues Mr. Maurer, “and subsequently suggested it to the Finance department leadership. We knew of Rise’s extensive relationships with other university trading labs, and they were recommended to us by Baruch.”
Since the new Business Instructional Facility opened its doors, the College has received many positive comments about their building in general and their new electronic display in particular. “The custom-made curved Rise Ticker display immediately captures everyone’s attention upon entering the new Business Instructional Facility at Illinois,” says Mr. Maurer.
“Overall we are happy. Kudos to the customer service reps who were always able to help out with any questions we had.”

At Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, more than 4,600 students benefit from the resources and opportunities of a major research university provided in a welcoming student-centered college environment. Students can choose from thirty-four bachelor’s, six associate, and two graduate degree programs.
The Sam and Irene Black School of Business is accredited by AACSB International, which sets the global standard for schools of business. This accreditation applies to all business programs, including the MBA., which is listed in U.S. News and World Report’s “America’s Best Graduate Schools-2005” and in Princeton Review’s “Best Business Schools.”

UT’s fans get the real score with stadiums new LED 8-color ticker
Posted on Wed, October 14, 2009
On a busy Saturday at University of Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium, diehard Vols fans are now being treated to more than great sports action. With the addition of a new LED ticker inside the stadium’s prestigious West Club, patrons can keep an eye on all the other games that day with up-to-the-minute scores scrolling by.
Inside the West Club, the new Rise Display 60-foot, curved LED 8-color ticker is clearly the centerpiece. Scott Carter, Director of Capital Support for Neyland Stadium, knows all too well the importance of connecting with Vols fans, especially those donors and supporters who are members of the new, exclusive West Club. Of the Club’s 450 seats that overlook the west sideline, goal line to goal line, 430 of them are movie theater-style chairs under cover, with cushion seating and cup holders. Patrons, who enter through a private concourse, are treated to gourmet food and enjoy pre-game festivities. From a private patio overlooking the famous Vols Walk. Club members get a birdseye view of teams as they walk from a central point on campus into the stadium. These fans are also elite supporters of UT’s athletics, and the university knew they needed a unique centerpiece that would draw these enthusiasts together inside the new part of the stadium.
“We can customize when we have groups or philanthropic endowment events and can target that group, thanking them and welcoming them to the West Club,” said Carter, who controls messaging using Display Wire, Rise Display’s web-based software. Display Wire includes a live sports data feed, which provides real time sports scores. “We can use it for wedding receptions and functions too, tethering those messages welcoming those people. Having the flexibility and freedom to tailor and customize messages on there and then have real time scores as well has been nothing but complimentary from everyone.”

University of Tampa installs Tri-color LED ticker display
Posted on Thu, October 29, 2009
The University of Tampa recently installed a 14 foot long tri-color LED ticker in their college of business. The scrolling ticker is located in the hallway and designed to attract attention to the finance lab where students work in simulated market conditions. The Rise Ticker is unique in design because the “smarts” are built in thus allowing the university to simply connect the LED display to their network and update it via the internet - no dedicated computer is required. From the web, professors at University of Tampa can easily type in welcome messages to visiting donors or potential new students along with hand selecting the stocks and indexes they want to show.
The LED ticker is simply the best way to create a financial atmosphere and attract attention for students and donors alike at the college of business.

Vertical LED Tickers - something unique
Posted on Mon, November 16, 2009
For clients looking to do something unique and architectural to fit in with their facility mounting a LED ticker vertically can provide a different look. A few example installation photos can be seen at the following links:
- Bank of America
- Wells Fargo
- Wacovia
One of the driving factors for installing a digital sign is to create “Wow Factor”. While Digital Signage and Video Walls can do a great job of creating this “Wow Factor” the LCD displays are much more rigid in design so they don’t allow for architects to curve them, bend them, or run them vertically up columns.
If you are looking to create a one of a kind atmosphere using sports scores, stock quotes, headline news, or just your own messages consider using a LED ticker display and finding a way to position it vertically.
